Were you at MEQ at the start of August (and if not, why not)? Did you look at Pudz and MoMo and think "I can do that!"? Do you fancy giving Roller Derby a try for FREE?!
If the answer to the last question is YES! (and why wouldn't it be) you'll be delighted to hear that Granite City Brawlers are holding free intake sessions every Friday evening for the rest of August. Thats right, pop along to the Aberdeen Lads Club on the 9th, 16th, 23rd or 30th to give this amazing sport a try. We provide all the equipment, all you need to bring is comfortable clothes for exercise and a water bottle to keep hydrated.
Don't forget, we're also on the look out for refs and NSOs, so if stripes are more your style, or you still want to help but don't fancy skating, you can still come along and see what it's all about!

It has been a rather hectic summer for Granite City Brawlers. Hot on the heels of our game against GMRD it was all hands on deck as the Iceberg that was MEQ was fast approaching! The MRDA European Qualifiers gave some of the top teams in Europe a chance to qualify for MRDA Champs, being held in Colorado in October. Hosted by GCB (due in no small part to the fantastic success of SSC last year), 4 teams joined them on the weekend of 3/4 August for two days packed with top level Roller Derby action.
Kamiquadz from France returned seeking to avenge their SSC final defeat while Tyne & Fear also returned to Aberdeen. GMRD travelled up the road having the shortest journey of the travelling teams, while Manneken Beasts from Belgium completed the line up.
After 4 games each, the final standings may surprise those who go by rankings alone, but on track there was no doubt that the final placements are all well deserved. Huge Congratulations to Kamiquadz for finishing top and to Manneken Beats, who both received medals and invites to Champs in October. Best of luck to those that make the journey across, we'll be cheering you on!

In June, the most eagerly anticipated derby match in Scottish history * finally happened as the stars aligned and Glasgow Mens Roller Derby and Granite City Brawlers finally faced off... in Dundee.
This was a closed game arranged at short notice in preparation for anticipated MEQ appearences for both teams, and was a tight affair throughout. The end result was a narrow win for GCB, but the real reward for the hard fought game was the promise of more games against GMRD in the future.

In May, Granite City Brawlers ventured further North than most thought possible, and journied to Tampere in Finland. Staying a stones throw from the Moomin Museum, we played two games back to back.
First up was the physically imposing Gothenburg Salty Seamen, before our rematch against Tampere Rollin' Bros, whom we narrowly beat back in September at the Silver City Cup.
Sadly for the Brawlers, both games ended in defeat for our 10 plucky skaters. Great fun was had by all during the trip as the team bonded over beers in the sauna, pay as you go scooters and group photo shoots. The trip ended with a mad dash across Schipol airport and our luggage getting left back in the Netherlands. Apart form Pakk Wylde's, that ended up in Forres of all places!
